About this exam
“UP TGT” is the name aspirants use for the selection of Assistant Teachers (graduate pay scale) — प्रशिक्षित स्नातक सहायक अध्यापक — in the aided (अशासकीय सहायता प्राप्त) secondary schools of Uttar Pradesh’s Secondary Education Department. A TGT teaches one subject in a high school, classes 6 to 10.
Since 2023 the selection is made by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), Prayagraj, under U.P. Act No. 15 of 2023. Earlier cycles, such as Advertisement 01/2016 and the 2021 examination, were run by the U.P. Secondary Education Services Selection Board.
The 2026 cycle (Advertisement No. 07/2026, published 23 October 2026) covers 17,735 posts: 16,193 in boys’ schools and 1,542 in girls’ schools. Selection is on the merit list of one written examination of 120 multiple-choice questions for 360 marks in two hours — 30 questions on general knowledge and 90 on the subject applied for, three marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong one. A graduate in the subject with a B.Ed who has passed a TET for classes 6 to 8 can apply; age is 21 to 62 as on 1 July 2026.
