Written test (stage 1): 100 objective questions in Hindi, 100 marks, two hours — 40 marks of general knowledge and logical reasoning, 30 of intellectual ability and mental aptitude, and 30 of science and simple arithmetic. A correct answer earns one mark; there is no negative marking. Seven times the advertised posts in each vertical category are shortlisted for the next stage by cut-off percentile.

Its marks are added to the written-test marks for the final merit list, and a candidate must score at least 30 of its 100 marks. Minimum height outside the SAF is 168 cm for men (160 cm for Scheduled Tribe men) and 155 cm for women; the standards are not relaxed.
The pay scale is ₹19,500–62,000, with a stipend of 70%, 80% and 90% of the minimum in the first three years.
